What is the difference between cold start and hot start of a motor?
Release Date:2025-01-07Source:Simo

As a key power equipment in industrial production, the starting method of the motor directly affects the production efficiency and the service life of the motor itself. The starting methods of the motor are mainly divided into cold start and hot start. So, what is the difference between the cold start and hot start of the motor?

Different definitions and application scenarios

The cold start of the motor refers to the starting method in which the motor temperature drops to the ambient temperature after the motor stops and cools down for a period of time. This method is usually used after the motor has been shut down for a long time, such as starting at night or after the weekend.

The warm start of the motor refers to the starting method in which the motor temperature remains within a certain range (such as around 75°C) after the motor stops. This method is usually used after the motor is shut down for a short time, such as starting during the lunch period.

Different temperature changes during the starting process

During the cold start process, the motor starts from the ambient temperature and the temperature gradually increases. During the hot start process, the motor has a certain temperature before starting, and the temperature is relatively stable during the starting process.

Different impacts on the motor

During the cold start process, the motor temperature gradually increases, and the thermal expansion coefficient of the winding insulation material is different, which easily leads to increased internal stress in the motor and affects the insulation performance of the motor. During the hot start process, the motor temperature is relatively stable, and the impact on the motor insulation performance is small.

Different starting speed and efficiency

Generally speaking, cold start takes a long time to reach the rated speed and the starting speed is slow. Hot start has a relatively fast starting speed due to the high motor temperature.

In short, there are certain differences between the cold start and hot start of the motor in terms of definition, application scenarios, temperature changes and impact on the motor. Users should choose the appropriate starting method according to actual production needs and motor operating status to ensure safe and stable operation of the motor and improve production efficiency.
