What is the difference between a synchronous motor and an asynchronous motor?
Release Date:2024-12-06Source:Simo

The main differences between synchronous motors and asynchronous motors include starting mode, working principle, speed control, power factor, overload characteristics, application range, structural complexity and other aspects

Let's explain the differences in each aspect one by one:

Starting mode: Asynchronous motors usually use auxiliary equipment such as starting capacitors and starting resistors for starting, while synchronous motors generally require external starting torque.

Working principle: Synchronous motors need to synchronize the magnetic field generated in the winding with the external magnetic field, while asynchronous motors achieve rotation based on the relative movement between the rotating magnetic field generated in the winding and the rotor.

Speed control: The speed of asynchronous motors is generally controlled by voltage changes, and variable frequency speed regulation can be used. The speed of synchronous motors is limited by the power supply frequency, and usually requires a mechanical speed change device to achieve speed control.

Power factor: The power factor of asynchronous motors is variable when the load changes, and is lower when light load or no load, while the power factor of synchronous motors is higher under partial load, which can be adjusted by reactive power compensation.

Overload characteristics: Asynchronous motors have good overload capacity and can withstand large loads in a short period of time. Synchronous motors have poor overload capacity and are prone to stalling under overload conditions.

Application range: Asynchronous motors are widely used in many fields, including household appliances, industrial production, transportation, agriculture, and construction engineering. Synchronous motors are mostly used in generator sets, devices that require precise control of speed and position, and electric vehicles.

Structural complexity: Synchronous motors have a more complex structure and usually require a more advanced control system, while asynchronous motors have a relatively simple structure and the control system is easier to implement.
