Repair methods for Simo motors after they get wet and damp
Release Date:2025-06-13Source:Simo

When Simo motors encounter moisture or are exposed to damp environments, the integrity and performance of the motor can be seriously compromised. XIAN Lite Simo Motors, a trusted manufacturer of high-efficiency industrial motors, has unveiled essential repair methods to help technicians and industries restore both ac permanent magnet motors and dc motors following water damage.

The first and most important step is to immediately disconnect the motor from the power source. Continued operation under wet conditions could worsen the damage, especially by short-circuiting internal windings or degrading insulation. After disconnection, motors should be thoroughly inspected for signs of corrosion, water pooling, and insulation failure.

Drying is the next vital phase. Technicians are advised to place motors in a warm, ventilated space, using hot air blowers or infrared lamps to eliminate residual moisture. For critical applications, vacuum drying or placing motors in low-humidity ovens is highly effective. A completely dried motor must pass insulation resistance tests, using a megohmmeter to ensure safe levels are achieved before reassembly.

In ac permanent magnet motors, magnets are especially sensitive to heat and moisture. Post-drying inspection includes checking magnetic flux levels, rotor surface condition, and encoder integrity. If rust or degaussing is present, rotor remagnetization or replacement may be required. On the other hand, dc motors often suffer from commutator and brush degradation. Cleaning these components with alcohol and verifying electrical continuity are necessary steps to return them to operational standards.

Bearing damage is a frequent consequence of water exposure. Even a few hours of dampness can cause pitting and rust. XIAN Lite Simo Motors recommends replacing all affected bearings and relubricating using moisture-resistant grease. Shaft alignment and vibration testing should follow to confirm mechanical stability.

After physical repairs, the motor should undergo a no-load test for a few hours. If temperature, noise, and vibration levels remain within standard limits, a gradual reintroduction to full operational load can be carried out. Documenting the entire repair and maintenance process ensures quality control and improves troubleshooting efficiency for future incidents.

To prevent future issues, it’s advisable to install protective covers, apply moisture-resistant coatings, and utilize environmental controls such as dehumidifiers in motor storage and operational environments. XIAN Lite Simo Motors has introduced optional IP-rated enclosures for both ac permanent magnet motors and dc motors, designed to shield electrical systems from harsh atmospheric conditions.

In industries where downtime can cost thousands of dollars per hour, having a reliable restoration process for water-damaged motors is essential. XIAN Lite Simo Motors continues to support global operations by delivering resilient motor technology and advanced service protocols that reduce repair time and maximize uptime.
