Brief Introduction

 

3 phase AC synchronous motor is a type of motor that is widely used in industrial applications and its main feature is that the rotor speed is strictly synchronised with the frequency of the power supply. The following are the main points about industrial synchronous motors.

The rotor of a synchronous motor is excited by a DC current to produce a constant magnetic field. When a three-phase AC current passes through the stator windings, a rotating magnetic field is produced. As the rotor magnetic field rotates in synchrony with the stator magnetic field, the rotational speed of the rotor and stator remains the same, i.e., the synchronous speed. This characteristic gives synchronous motors a great advantage in speed control and stability.

Constant Speed: The speed is always synchronised with the power supply frequency, regardless of load variations. This is important in applications where precise speed control is required.

High Efficiency: Synchronous motors are generally more efficient because there is no current passing through the rotor (unless a special starting method is used at start-up).

Power Factor Correction: Synchronous motors can have their power factor adjusted by regulating the excitation current, allowing them to be used as reactive power compensation devices in power systems as well.

Robust structure: synchronous motors have a simple structure and are easier to maintain.
